Intergenerational Trauma in the Jewish Experience

As the daughter-in-law of a Holocaust survivor who endured the concentration camps, I have a deep awareness of how trauma can be carried across generations, shaping identity, safety, and the nervous system in ways that are often unspoken but deeply felt.

In the wake of the October 7 terrorist attacks and the rise in antisemitism around the world beginning October 8, many Jewish individuals have experienced a profound shift. What was once described by previous generations as vigilance or warning has, for many, become a lived reality.

These experiences can reactivate layers of historical and intergenerational trauma, often without a clear or safe place to process them.

I am committed to providing a space where this can be understood, named, and worked through with clinical depth, respect, and care, within a practice that prioritizes psychological safety for Jewish patients, alongside all individuals seeking thoughtful, culturally responsive treatment.

Welcome! I am a dual board-certified Nurse Practitioner with over 25 years of experience in medicine, specializing in psychiatric disorders and holistic mental health care. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working across diverse clinical settings, serving individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and identities—including neurodivergent individuals and those in the LGBTQ+ community. My approach is deeply informed by both advanced clinical training and lived experience: I am neurodivergent myself and am a proud parent to two neurodivergent children (Autism and AuDHD). This perspective shapes my commitment to providing affirming, individualized care that honors the unique ways each brain works and thrives.

My journey into integrative medicine began with a profound personal experience in my teenage years. Struggling with a severe and chronic illness that allopathic medicine couldn't alleviate, my mother, my fierce advocate to this day (at 84) sought out an exceptional Osteopathic physician practicing integrative medicine. Well worth the weekly hour-long drives, his holistic approach gradually restored my health. This transformative experience ignited my passion for medicine and set me on a path of exploring holistic healing alongside conventional treatments.

Over 25 years ago, I started my career as a registered nurse working in many specialties before finding my passion in my  20's in the dynamic perioperative arena. Working as a RN I developed a deep appreciation for my role as healer and advocate for the patients in my care. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, a desire to "do more" to help patients in a vastly changing medical arena,  I pursued a Master of Science as a Nurse Practitioner in family medicine. In my practice, I integrated knowledge learned from integrative and functional medicine conferences, witnessing firsthand the powerful impact of combining evidence-based functional and integrative interventions alongside  conventional medicine.

Despite the fulfillment found in primary care, I increasingly encountered patients grappling with complex psychiatric conditions overlaid with chronic diseases, pain, depression, anxiety, trauma, and more. Frustrated by the limitations of short appointment times and insurance constraints, I pursued a second Master's program in Psychiatry. Initially planning to dual-certify and continue in primary care, my focus shifted upon completion as I recognized the critical need for specialized psychiatric care addressing underlying root causes.

My decision was further motivated by a significant family history of mental health issues , my personal experiences, and my experience as a parent of two children with autism (one with AuDHD), providing me with a unique understanding of and empathy for neurodiverse populations. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse spectrum of individuals—from children to elderly patients, from those experiencing homelessness to affluent individuals seeking meaning beyond material wealth.

I have treated patients facing a myriad of challenges, including severe anxiety, debilitating depression, PTSD among first responders, caregiver burnout in parents of special needs children, addiction, trauma survivors, and individuals navigating life transitions such as retirement or mid-life crises. I have supported patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, chronic suicidal ideation and other severe psychiatric illnesses, offering personalized treatment plans that integrate psychiatric medications with holistic approaches to address physical health, lifestyle factors, and psychological well-being.

My approach to patient care emphasizes collaboration, empathy, and empowerment. I believe in creating a safe and supportive environment where patients feel heard and understood, and where healing, joy, and peace are achievable goals. I am dedicated to continuing education, staying abreast of the latest advancements in psychiatry, functional and integrative medicine to provide my patients with the highest standard of care.

I pursued a year-long fellowship in Functional and Integrative Psychiatry, training under James Greenblatt, MD, widely regarded as a pioneer in the field. This experience strengthened my root-cause, whole-person approach and complements my foundation in traditional psychiatry. I remain current in both traditional and functional psychiatry through ongoing study and advanced training, ensuring that my care is informed by the latest clinical evidence and integrative insights.

In my free time you can find me spending time with my family and rescue dogs,  reading, researching, reading medical journals, spending time in nature, listening to music, meditating, doing art projects with my kids, practicing yoga, cycling, trying a new recipe in the kitchen, or practicing the art of doing nothing.... being a "human being" as opposed to a "human doing."

I am dedicated to a comprehensive, whole-body approach to Psychiatric care. My practice focuses on evidence-based Integrative and Functional Psychiatry, which integrates brain health optimization with pharmacological interventions.

I believe in addressing psychiatric issues by examining all contributing factors. This includes exploring underlying medical conditions, biological factors, inflammation, metabolic factors, genetic influences, nutritional deficiencies, environmental factors, the gut-brain connection, infectious factors, medication interactions and side effects, sleep disturbances, chronic stress, addiction, trauma, grief, and dysfunctional thinking patterns. By addressing these pieces of the puzzle, we can uncover the root causes hindering your path to wellness.

Many of my patients seek my care after challenges with traditional treatments, such as ineffective antidepressants or concerns about medication dependence. I offer an alternative approach by zooming out and examining all aspects of your health. This holistic view considers physiological imbalances, nutrient absorption, microbiome diversity, genetic markers, food sensitivities, untreated infections, autoimmune conditions, and chronic inflammations.

A key aspect of my approach targets the functional root of many psychiatric disorders: brain inflammation. By addressing this underlying issue and partnering with my patients, I aim to implement real change through actionable steps from our very first session together.

My approach to psychotherapy is deeply rooted in a holistic philosophy that integrates psychological, physical, biological, and spiritual dimensions. I believe in meeting patients where they are, fostering genuine therapeutic alliances built on empathy, non-judgmental understanding and deep listening with heart.

My spiritual journey has profoundly shaped my practice. I believe that when medicine or psychology is disconnected from spirituality, it can miss the deeper layers of human experience—the realms of meaning, longing, and purpose that are essential to true healing. Clinical knowledge alone cannot fully grasp the essence of a person’s being or illuminate the roots of their suffering. Through presence, discernment, and asking the right questions, I strive to connect with patients on a soul level—uncovering the emotional, relational, and spiritual dimensions that support their path to wholeness.

I utilize a variety of therapeutic modalities tailored to each individual's spiritual and psychological needs, including Mindfulness-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Strengths-based therapy,  Problem focused therapy, and Logotherapy.

I approach every therapeutic interaction with a profound sense of responsibility and respect for the trust placed in me by those I serve. Upholding the highest ethical standards is paramount in all aspects of my practice.

I am committed to empowering you on your journey to mental well-being, providing compassionate care, and guiding you towards a healthier, more balanced life.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a debilitating mental health condition characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed (anhedonia), and a range of cognitive and physical symptoms. These may include disturbances in sleep, appetite, and energy levels, as well as feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness  or excessive guilt. Depressive episodes can vary in duration and severity, often lasting weeks to months if left untreated.

Additionally, individuals with depression may experience symptoms which can impact their ability to function socially, occupationally, or academically. Thoughts of death or suicide may also occur, necessitating immediate professional intervention.

Treatment options for depression include psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, integrative and functional approaches or a combination of these modalities. Seeking timely diagnosis and personalized treatment is crucial in alleviating symptoms and preventing recurrence. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of depression, including postpartum depression, reaching out to a mental health professional can provide the support and resources needed for recovery.

Anxiety disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive worry, fear, or apprehension. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) involves persistent and excessive worry about various aspects of life, often accompanied by physical symptoms such as restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances.

Panic Disorder is marked by recurrent and unexpected panic attacks—sudden periods of intense fear or discomfort—accompanied by physical symptoms like palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, and feelings of impending doom.

Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia) causes an intense fear of social situations where individuals fear being scrutinized or judged, leading to avoidance behaviors that can impair social and occupational functioning.

Specific Phobias involve intense fear or anxiety about specific objects or situations (e.g., heights, animals), prompting avoidance behaviors.

These disorders can significantly affect daily life and well-being. Effective treatments include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), medications, and other personalized therapeutic approaches. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for managing symptoms and improving overall quality of life. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of anxiety, seeking professional help can provide support and guidance toward effective treatment.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can develop after exposure to a traumatic event. Symptoms include intrusive memories, flashbacks, nightmares, severe emotional distress, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, negative changes in mood and cognition, and heightened arousal (e.g., difficulty sleeping, hypervigilance). These symptoms persist beyond the initial event and can significantly impair daily functioning and quality of life. Effective treatments include trauma-focused therapies such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), as well as medications to manage symptoms. Early intervention and support are crucial for individuals experiencing PTSD to facilitate recovery and improve well-being.

Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (cPTSD) typically arises from prolonged exposure to traumatic events or repeated traumas, such as childhood abuse, domestic violence, or ongoing exposure to violence or captivity. In addition to symptoms similar to PTSD, individuals with cPTSD may experience disturbances in self-identity, relational difficulties, emotional dysregulation, and a persistent sense of emptiness or hopelessness. Treatment involves comprehensive approaches addressing both trauma-specific symptoms and broader psychological and interpersonal challenges. Therapy modalities such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), prolonged exposure therapy, and psychodynamic therapy can be effective in helping individuals manage and recover from cPTSD, improving their overall quality of life and sense of well-being.

Bipolar Disorder is a mood disorder characterized by alternating episodes of elevated mood (mania or hypomania) and depression. These shifts can significantly affect functioning, behavior, and overall quality of life. The condition is categorized into two primary subtypes:

Bipolar I Disorder

Bipolar I Disorder is diagnosed based on the presence of at least one manic episode lasting seven days or more, or requiring hospitalization due to severity. Manic episodes involve elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and increased goal-directed activity or energy, along with symptoms such as:

  • Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity

  • Decreased need for sleep

  • Pressured speech

  • Racing thoughts

  • Distractibility

  • Risk-taking or impulsivity

Depressive episodes are common and can be profound, though not required for the diagnosis.

Bipolar II Disorder

Bipolar II Disorder requires at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode. Hypomania shares features with mania but is less severe, does not include psychosis, and does not necessitate hospitalization. The depressive episodes in Bipolar II often cause the most functional impairment.

Integrative and Functional Psychiatry Approach

In addition to conventional treatment, a functional psychiatry approach aims to identify and address underlying biological contributors to mood dysregulation. This includes evaluating for:

  • Micronutrient deficiencies (e.g., magnesium, zinc, vitamin D, B vitamins)

  • Mitochondrial dysfunction or oxidative stress

  • Thyroid or hormonal imbalances

  • Inflammatory markers or immune dysregulation

  • Gut dysbiosis and compromised gut-brain axis signaling

  • Circadian rhythm disruption

  • Sleep architecture abnormalities

Addressing these factors may help reduce episode frequency and severity, support mood stabilization, and enhance day-to-day functioning.

Treatment plans may include mood-stabilizing medications, psychotherapy, lifestyle interventions, and targeted strategies to correct biological imbalances. The goal is not only symptom management but also long-term resilience, cognitive clarity, and quality of life.

Sleep disorders are complex, multifactorial conditions that impact the quality, timing, and architecture of sleep. Common types include insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, circadian rhythm disorders, and parasomnias such as night terrors or sleepwalking. These disturbances can lead to daytime fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, irritability, anxiety, and increased risk for cardiometabolic and psychiatric conditions.

From a functional and integrative psychiatry perspective, sleep is a critical biomarker of systemic health—deeply influenced by neuroendocrine, immunological, metabolic, and psychospiritual factors. We investigate root causes such as:

  • HPA axis dysregulation (e.g., cortisol awakening response, nighttime elevations)

  • Chronic inflammation or histamine intolerance

  • Neurotransmitter imbalances, including GABA, glutamate, and serotonin

  • Thyroid and sex hormone fluctuations, including perimenopausal shifts

  • Micronutrient insufficiencies

  • Gut-brain axis disruptions, such as dysbiosis or poor vagal tone

  • Environmental exposures including light pollution, EMFs, and mycotoxins

We utilize comprehensive functional testing—such as salivary cortisol curves, nutrient status, and gut microbiome analysis—to uncover root contributors to sleep disturbances. Our care plans integrate evidence-based therapeutic strategies, sleep hygiene optimization, mind-body techniques, and trauma-informed approaches to support the body's natural sleep architecture.

Whether sleep difficulties are longstanding or stress-induced, our goal is to restore deep, restorative sleep as a foundation for emotional balance, mental clarity, and long-term resilience.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD)

ADHD/ADD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity that can significantly impact daily functioning across various settings.  In my practice, I offer comprehensive ADHD evaluations for adults, designed to thoroughly assess symptoms, rule out other conditions, and provide individualized treatment recommendations. These evaluations include clinical interviews, validated rating scales, a thorough review of personal and family history, obtaining collateral information and assessment of co-occurring conditions.

I specialize in non-stimulant approaches to managing ADHD/ADD symptoms, preferring to utilize medications other than stimulants like Adderall or Vyvanse.

Non-Stimulant Approaches: Alongside therapeutic interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) , ADHD  neuroaffirming coaching and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), I incorporate non-stimulant medications to address ADHD/ADD symptoms effectively. These medications focus on enhancing attention, reducing impulsivity, and improving overall functioning without the use of stimulant drugs.

Lifestyle Factors: Addressing sleep patterns, executive functioning, exercise routines, and stress management techniques is essential to complement medication therapy, promoting optimal cognitive and emotional regulation.

Mind-Body Interventions: Mindfulness practices, meditation, and yoga are integrated into treatment plans to promote focus, reduce impulsivity, and enhance overall well-being.

Nutrition and Supplements: Targeted amino acids, vitamins, and other supplements are utilized to support brain health and neurotransmitter function, addressing nutritional deficiencies that can contribute to ADHD symptoms.

By integrating these comprehensive approaches, including non-stimulant medications, I strive to provide personalized care that optimizes outcomes for individuals with ADHD/ADD. This approach emphasizes a holistic approach to treatment, empowering individuals to achieve their full potential in all aspects of life.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at reducing distress or preventing feared outcomes. As an integrative psychiatric nurse practitioner, I specialize in a comprehensive approach to managing OCD symptoms, tailoring treatment to each individual's needs.

My approach to OCD treatment focuses on evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), particularly Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP helps individuals confront feared situations or thoughts without engaging in compulsive behaviors, leading to reduced anxiety and improved symptom management.

Medications: I utilize evidence based medications to address OCD symptoms effectively. These medications often target serotonin levels in the brain to alleviate obsessions and compulsions, promoting better control over intrusive thoughts and behaviors.

Lifestyle Factors: Addressing lifestyle factors such as sleep hygiene, stress management techniques, and healthy routines is essential in supporting overall mental health and well-being, complementing medication and therapy.

Mind-Body Interventions: Mindfulness techniques, relaxation exercises, and yoga are integrated into treatment plans to enhance emotional regulation, reduce anxiety levels, and promote overall well-being.

Nutrition and Supplements: Targeted supplements and dietary adjustments may be recommended to support brain function and optimize treatment outcomes for OCD.

By combining these holistic approaches, I aim to provide personalized care that empowers individuals with OCD to manage symptoms effectively and improve their quality of life. Each treatment plan is tailored to address the unique challenges and goals of the individual, promoting lasting recovery and well-being.

Deprescribing Support

Reducing or discontinuing psychiatric medications is a complex and highly individualized process. At Brain Garden Psychiatry, I work collaboratively with patients to ensure that deprescribing is done safely, gently, and effectively. I take into account your treatment goals, medical and psychiatric history, duration of use, potential drug interactions (especially when cross-titrating), and overall stability. I also carefully consider your current symptoms, lifestyle, environment, and support system to develop a personalized tapering plan that prioritizes your well-being.

As a dual board-certified psychiatric and family nurse practitioner with a Functional and Integrative Psychiatry lens, I incorporate nutrition, targeted nutraceuticals, somatic practices, and mind-body support to ease the transition off medications. This holistic approach helps minimize withdrawal symptoms and supports your nervous system in adapting and healing.

What is Hyperbolic Tapering?

Psychiatric medications often affect the brain in non-linear ways. That means reducing a medication by the same amount each time (e.g., cutting 5 mg each week) can feel easy at first—but become surprisingly difficult as the dose gets lower. This is where hyperbolic tapering becomes essential.

Hyperbolic tapering involves smaller and smaller dose reductions as you approach the lower end, respecting your brain's increased sensitivity at lower doses. This method reduces the risk of withdrawal symptoms, emotional destabilization, and nervous system dysregulation.

Example:

Let’s say someone is taking 20 mg of an SSRI (e.g., Lexapro):

  • A linear taper might look like: 20 → 15 → 10 → 5 → 0
(Each step is a large percentage drop, especially near the end.)

  • A hyperbolic taper would look more like:
    20 → 17.5 → 15 → 13 → 11 → 10 → 9 → 8 → 7 → … → 0.25 mg
(Each step becomes gradually smaller, often using liquid formulations or compounded microdoses.)

This gentler approach gives the nervous system time to adjust at each level, significantly reducing the chance of rebound anxiety, insomnia, or emotional dysregulation.

Is Deprescribing Right for You?

Whether you're feeling ready to reduce a long-term medication, struggling with side effects, or exploring root-cause healing, I offer individualized deprescribing support rooted in evidence, compassion, and integrative care.

You're not alone—and there’s a path forward that honors both your mind and body.

As part of my functional and integrative approach to psychiatry, I offer precision psychiatry testing to help personalize treatment plans based on an individual patient’s biology.

Traditional psychiatric treatment has often relied on a trial-and-error approach when selecting medications. Precision psychiatry aims to provide additional biologic insight that may help guide treatment decisions more thoughtfully and efficiently.

Pharmacogenetic Testing

I offer pharmacogenetic testing, which evaluates genetic variations that may affect:

  • medication metabolism
  • medication sensitivity
  • side effect risk
  • and potential medication response

This testing may provide information about important medication metabolism pathways, including CYP450 enzymes such as CYP2D6, CYP2C19, CYP3A4, and CYP1A2, which play major roles in how many antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, ADHD medications, and benzodiazepines are processed by the body.

Testing may also include evaluation of genes involved in neurotransmitter regulation, methylation, and medication response pathways such as MTHFR and COMT.

This information can sometimes help explain why certain patients:

  • are unusually sensitive to medications
  • experience significant side effects
  • require lower or higher dosing
  • or have had difficulty finding effective treatments

Advanced Precision Psychiatry Testing with BrightKaire

I also offer advanced precision psychiatry testing through in my office.

Unlike traditional cheek-swab genetic testing alone, this newer technology uses a simple blood draw combined with induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology.

In simplified terms, a patient’s blood cells are reprogrammed into stem cells and then transformed into patient-derived neurons in a laboratory setting. Researchers can then study how those neurons respond to different antidepressant medications.

This emerging technology attempts to move beyond medication metabolism alone and provide additional insight into how an individual patient’s brain cells may biologically respond to treatment.

While this field is still evolving and not yet widely utilized in mainstream psychiatry, it represents an exciting advancement in precision medicine and personalized mental health care.

A Personalized, Whole-Person Approach

Genetic and precision psychiatry testing are only one piece of a comprehensive treatment approach.

Mental health is influenced by many interconnected factors, including:

  • sleep
  • stress physiology
  • trauma history
  • nutrition
  • inflammation
  • hormones
  • nervous system regulation
  • relationships
  • environment
  • and lifestyle factors

Testing does not replace thoughtful clinical care, psychotherapy, or lifestyle interventions. Instead, it may provide another layer of information that can help support more individualized and biologically informed treatment decisions.

If you are interested in learning more about precision psychiatry testing and whether it may be appropriate for your situation, I would be happy to discuss options during a consultation.

As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), I specialize in providing comprehensive autism evaluations for adults, as well as neuroaffirming therapy and medication management (for co-occuring conditions) tailored to the unique needs of neurodiverse individuals.

Many autistic adults—especially women and people of color—go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. Traditional mental health approaches often miss the mark, creating barriers to care and leaving many feeling unseen or misunderstood. I provide evaluations that are thorough, respectful, and rooted in the latest research on adult autism, with a focus on honoring lived experience.

The evaluation process includes:

  • Completion of validated self-report screening tools

  •  diagnostic interview (over 2-3 sessions) exploring developmental history, identity, and lived experience

  • Collateral input (with your consent) from a parent, partner, or close support person

  • A 90-minute follow-up session to review findings and provide feedback

  • A detailed written report including diagnostic impressions and personalized recommendations

Whether you’ve long suspected you might be autistic, recently discovered the concept of neurodivergence, or are seeking clarity to better understand yourself, this evaluation is designed to provide insight, relief, and a path forward.

In addition to evaluations, I offer neuroaffirming therapy that respects and supports the unique cognitive, emotional, and sensory experiences of autistic individuals. My medication management approach is personalized, recognizing that neurodiverse brains may respond differently to psychiatric medications. Every aspect of care is designed to be inclusive, empowering, and research-informed.

My goal is to create a welcoming, supportive environment where autistic adults feel seen, validated, and equipped with the tools and care they need to thrive.

Compassionate, Root-Cause Psychiatry for Neurodivergent Youth

At Brain Garden Psychiatry, I offer Functional and Integrative Psychiatric Support for children, adolescents, and teens—particularly those who are autistic, have ADHD/AuDHD, or are navigating complex emotional and behavioral challenges. My work is grounded in partnership: I collaborate with your child’s pediatrician, psychiatrist, or other primary medical providers to ensure safe, coordinated, and thoughtful care.

While I do not serve as the primary psychiatric prescriber, I support families through a comprehensive, root-cause lens—helping to uncover what may be driving symptoms beneath the surface. This approach is especially helpful for children experiencing anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, sensory regulation issues, or co-occurring neurodevelopmental conditions.

My services include:

  • Comprehensive psychiatric and developmental evaluations

  • Functional lab and nutritional assessments

  • Personalized supplement and lifestyle recommendations
  • 504 and IEP recommendations

  • Trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming care

My work focuses on connecting the invisible dots that join  mental health and  physical health. I explore the interconnected biological, environmental, and emotional factors that may contribute to psychiatric symptoms, including:

  • Undiagnosed or underlying medical conditions

  • Genetic and neurobiological vulnerabilities

  • Inflammation and metabolic imbalances

  • Nutritional deficiencies and gut-brain dysfunction

  • Environmental toxins and infectious contributors

  • Medication side effects and drug-nutrient interactions

  • Sleep disruption, chronic stress, trauma, and grief

This integrative model allows us to create a personalized, compassionate treatment plan—one that supports not just symptom relief, but long-term healing, nervous system resilience, and whole-family wellness.

At Brain Garden Psychiatry, we recognize the profound impact of the gut on brain health and mood. The gut-brain axis is a complex bidirectional communication system between the gastrointestinal tract and the brain, influencing various aspects of our mental well-being. Research increasingly shows that imbalances in gut microbiota (the community of microorganisms in the digestive tract) can contribute to conditions like anxiety, depression, and even neurodegenerative diseases.

We offer advanced GI testing, including the GI360™ Profile, which delivers comprehensive insights into the gut microbiome’s composition and function. This in-depth analysis allows us to assess how gastrointestinal health may be contributing to systemic inflammation, immune dysregulation, and neuropsychiatric symptoms.

By pinpointing microbial imbalances, pathogenic overgrowth, digestive insufficiencies, and markers of intestinal inflammation, we can design precise, lab-guided interventions to support gut and brain health.

Our integrative approach combines advanced microbiome science with highly personalized care. Targeted interventions may include evidence-based supplements—such as strain-specific probiotics, immunomodulatory botanicals, digestive enzymes, and gut-repair nutrients—alongside therapeutic diets and lifestyle strategies. Each recommendation is informed by your unique lab results, clinical history, and comorbidities.

We specialize in working with individuals navigating the complex overlap of gastrointestinal disorders—such as IBS, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis—and mental health conditions including anxiety, depression, trauma, and cognitive challenges. By addressing the bidirectional communication between the gut and brain, we aim to restore physiological balance, reduce symptom burden, and promote lasting mental and physical wellness.

At Brain Garden Psychiatry, I take a comprehensive, integrative approach to mental health care that looks beyond symptoms alone. Mental health conditions are often influenced by interconnected physiologic, nutritional, inflammatory, hormonal, metabolic, gastrointestinal, environmental, and genetic factors that may contribute to mood, cognition, energy, sleep, nervous system regulation, and overall well-being.

In addition to standard laboratory testing available through  LabCorp (with many tests covered by most insurance plans), I also utilize specialty laboratories for Functional Medicine testing (such as Genova Diagnostics, Mosaic Diagnostics, Doctor’s Data, and others) when clinically appropriate.

The goal of testing is not simply to “treat lab values,” but to better understand the underlying biologic patterns that may be contributing to symptoms and to help guide more personalized treatment recommendations.

Standard Medical Laboratory Testing

Comprehensive medical screening may include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP)
  • thyroid function testing
  • iron studies and ferritin
  • vitamin and nutrient evaluation
  • inflammatory markers
  • lipid panels
  • insulin resistance and metabolic markers
  • autoimmune screening
  • celiac screening
  • Lyme disease testing
  • H. pylori testing
  • stool ova and parasite (O&P) testing
  • selected food allergy and environmental allergy testing
  • hormone evaluation
  • infectious disease screening when indicated
  • liver and kidney function assessment

These tests can sometimes identify underlying contributors to symptoms such as:

  • fatigue
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • brain fog
  • insomnia
  • irritability
  • cognitive difficulties
  • mood instability
  • gastrointestinal symptoms

Organic Acids Testing (OAT)

I may also recommend Organic Acids Testing (OAT), a specialized urine test that evaluates metabolic and cellular function.

The OAT may provide insight into:

  • mitochondrial function and energy production
  • neurotransmitter metabolism
  • oxidative stress
  • vitamin and nutrient deficiencies
  • detoxification pathways
  • yeast or fungal overgrowth
  • bacterial dysbiosis
  • gut microbiome patterns
  • and metabolic contributors to mood, cognition, inflammation, and fatigue

This testing can sometimes be particularly helpful in patients with chronic fatigue, brain fog, treatment-resistant symptoms, neurodevelopmental conditions, medication sensitivity, gastrointestinal symptoms, or complex chronic illness presentations.

Stool & Gut Microbiome Testing

Because the gut and brain are closely connected through immune, inflammatory, neurologic, and metabolic pathways, I may also recommend advanced stool and microbiome testing in certain patients.

Comprehensive stool testing may evaluate:

  • gut microbiome balance
  • digestive function
  • inflammation
  • bacterial overgrowth
  • yeast or fungal overgrowth
  • parasites
  • intestinal immune activity
  • short-chain fatty acids
  • and markers associated with intestinal permeability and gut health

Emerging research continues to demonstrate strong connections between gastrointestinal health, inflammation, neurotransmitter signaling, and mental health symptoms.

Precision Psychiatry & Pharmacogenomic Testing

I also offer precision psychiatry testing, including pharmacogenomic testing through and advanced neuronal-response testing through.

Pharmacogenomic testing through Genomind may help evaluate genetic variations affecting:

  • medication metabolism
  • medication sensitivity
  • side effect risk

This testing may include analysis of important medication metabolism enzymes such as CYP2D6, CYP2C19, CYP3A4, and CYP1A2, which play major roles in how many antidepressants, antipsychotics, ADHD medications, mood stabilizers, and benzodiazepines are processed by the body.

Advanced precision psychiatry testing through BrightKaire / NeuroKaire uses a simple blood draw and induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology to create patient-derived neurons in a laboratory setting. Researchers can then study how those neurons respond to different antidepressant medications to provide additional biologic insight into individualized treatment response.

While these technologies are still evolving and not yet widely utilized in mainstream psychiatry, they represent exciting advancements in personalized mental health care and precision medicine.

Environmental & Specialty Testing

When clinically indicated, additional specialty testing may include:

  • food sensitivity testing
  • environmental toxin screening
  • mold and mycotoxin testing
  • heavy metal evaluation
  • hormone testing
  • plasma amino acid analysis
  • and Hair Element Analysis

Hair Element Analysis is a non-invasive test that evaluates patterns of essential minerals such as magnesium, zinc, copper, lithium, and selenium, as well as toxic elements including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead. Because hair reflects longer-term physiologic patterns, this testing may sometimes provide additional information regarding nutrient balance, toxic exposures, mineral metabolism, and physiologic stress patterns over time.

A Personalized, Whole-Person Approach

Testing is always interpreted within the broader clinical context of the individual person.

Mental health symptoms are influenced by many interconnected factors, including:

  • nervous system regulation
  • trauma history
  • sleep
  • nutrition
  • inflammation
  • relationships
  • stress physiology
  • environment
  • hormones
  • and lifestyle patterns

The goal is to combine thoughtful psychiatric care with data-informed, individualized, and compassionate treatment planning that supports long-term healing, resilience, and overall well-being.
